Can you believe it’s been nearly 35 years since the Original Karate Kid film featuring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and William Zabka was released? I was not around during 1984, the year the movie came out, however as I grew up my parents introduced me to martial arts, specifically Taekwondo. Watching this movie, kids of this current generation have been inspired by how the main character, a boy named Daniel Larusso, got bullied by kids in his high school and was trained by a Japanese man named Mr Miyagi. He proved himself victorious during the Karate tournament he was subsequently entered into by his karate teacher.
This movie has inspired an entire generation because it teaches us the lesson of never giving up in life but at the same time, it also teaches us about being disciplined enough to achieve our goals. After watching this classic martial arts movie, people want to learn this art as they realise the importance of defending themselves as well as their families.

Martial arts is a sport of fighting which is taught for self-defence. There are different and unique forms of martial arts; some of the most common ones are Karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Wu Shu and Judo. Most of these art forms have been created in Asian countries and each art form has their own distinctive style. These martial art forms are not meant to be used to harm someone but to be used to protect yourself if someone tries to harm you in any way. The aim of martial arts is to “create peace with people” not violence. The main benefits of martial arts are fitness, high self- esteem, self- confidence, mental alertness, being balanced mentally and physically and finally immunity to diseases.
Martial arts can gain kids confidence and alertness as it requires concentration and as you keep performing these kinds of styles of art you obtain more and more attentiveness which increases from time to time. Many of these martial arts have the word “Do”, at the end of the name, which refers to the “way of life”. So what their trying to say is that martial arts should become a part of everyday life.
If you have not ever tried any form of martial arts, now is a good a time as any other and if you are one of the few people not to have seen the original movie, then you must watch it without delay!
