With the introduction of the Student Council this year, there has been a rise in spirit throughout the MYP and DP, ranging from more events to our first ever Spirit Week, leading up to Sports Day! Sports day is one of the most anticipated days of the school year, and this year to build that excitement, the student council (specifically Tarana Ramachandra – head of school spirit) organized an incredible spirit week that led to the preliminary rounds of sports day and the actual day itself.
A spirit week as the name suggests is designed to raise spirit within school, through providing a “theme” everyday that the students must follow. Our spirit week went something like this:
MONDAY: BLACKOUTDAY
Monday, the first day of spirit week started out on the simpler side. Everyone showed up in the most basic closet essentials, a full black outfit. The usually very colorful stilts and second floor were now fully just expanses of students in black, barring a few that forgot or accidentally were misled into wearing other colors.
TUESDAY: TWIN DAY
Tuesday brought together some alliteration, twinning (or matching in a larger group). While some had planned their outfits over days, others had slightly last minute ideas, and while some twins were not actually twinning (more fraternal to say), the theme was there throughout the school. Many students had identical tops and bottoms, and some even went as far as to ensure the same socks.
WEDNESDAY: ANYTHING BUT A BACKPACK DAY
Wednesday brought around the only day that had nothing to do with how you dressed, but instead the most basic school essential: your backpack. Anything but a backpack day entailed essentially bringing anything but a backpack to school. While some took the more creative route of bringing buckets, briefcases and suitcases, others kept it more simple with tote bags and duffle bags.
THURSDAY: PYJAMA DAY
Thursday rolled around with pyjama day, which was the only time students could come to school wearing exactly what they had worn to bed the previous night. Students came in their most oversized and comfiest clothes, while others wore what they usually wear to school, explaining that is essentially what they sleep in. This day also brought around a huge wave of flannel pyjamas which were seen on almost every girl, and was coined as the second twin day of the week.
FRIDAY: HOUSE COLOR DAYS
Friday, the day of the preliminary sports day rounds meant that students came in their house colors to either play for their teams or cheer them on. The school was an expanse of red, green, yellow and blue, with every captain ensuring that each student came wearing their house colors, so no house would lose any points.
This sports day brought around the first of many spirit weeks, which were a super simple and fun way to build excitement for sports day. With Ascend expanding, spirit has also been expanding, which has been great for students to experience, and also made events that much bigger and better.
