What is the migrant caravan?

A group of migrants from central South America particularly from countries of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras to avoid persecution, poverty and violence in their home countries. More than 7,000 Central American migrants have arrived at the US-Mexico border according to the Mexican Interior Ministry, they have crossed Mexico’s border and are resting at the city of Tijuana.

Why would they decide upon travelling 2700 miles?

They wish to escape their dangerous and poor lifestyles, some who have been threatened or extorted by criminal gangs operating in their hometowns. Many are travelling with their children who they want to protect from gang violence. They want to enter the United States, in order to receive the protection they believe they deserve. Upon their arrival, they will make a claim to asylum, even though President Trump also issued an order denying asylum to migrants crossing the southern border illegally, but the US federal judge has halted this order. However, they haven’t received any negativity on their journey until now. Volunteers have dropped off shoes, clothes and cooked meals. A number of musicians have turned up at the camps to entertain the migrants and help with driving people around Mexico.

Accompanying this threat the  US has deployed about 5,800 troops to the southern border

What does the US say about this?

As we know Mexico and the US have a lot of political tension regarding their border, and the infamous President Trump has declared that these migrants are ‘invaders.’ Along with tweeting “many gang members and some very bad people are mixed into the caravan heading to our southern border” and warning that “our military is waiting for you”. Accompanying this threat the  US has deployed about 5,800 troops to the southern border and has added concertina wire to some stretches of the border fence to tighten the security.

Only time will tell us the outcome for these immigrants.
